The victim, based in the southern Johor district, was initially drawn into the scheme through promises of high investment returns. The scammer's strategy involved sending the victim a trial payment of RM5,000, which successfully built confidence and trust in the fraudulent operation.
Encouraged by the initial payout, the victim proceeded to transfer substantial sums into the investment platform over an extended period. The cumulative losses reached RM1.15 million before the victim became aware of the scam's true nature.
The incident highlights a common tactic employed by online investment fraudsters in Malaysia, who use small initial payouts to establish credibility before soliciting larger investments from victims. Authorities have warned the public to exercise caution with unsolicited investment opportunities, particularly those promising guaranteed or unusually high returns.
The Pontian case adds to a growing number of investment fraud cases reported across Malaysia, where victims lose significant sums to sophisticated online schemes. Police have advised potential investors to verify the legitimacy of investment platforms through the Securities Commission Malaysia and to avoid transferring funds to unregistered operators.
