Air quality monitoring data released Tuesday shows unhealthy pollution levels across 21 areas nationwide, with Bukit Rambai in Melaka leading the deterioration at an Air Pollutant Index reading of 174. The location's elevated reading signals hazardous conditions that may affect vulnerable population groups including children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions.
Negeri Sembilan's Nilai recorded the second-highest reading at 162, while Melaka city itself registered 161 on the index. The three central Malaysian locations have prompted health officials to advise residents to limit outdoor activities and use appropriate respiratory protection when venturing outside.
The widespread air quality degradation affecting multiple regions suggests atmospheric conditions conducive to pollution accumulation. Authorities have not specified the primary pollution sources, though industrial emissions and vehicle exhaust typically contribute significantly to regional air quality fluctuations.
Malaysian environment officials are monitoring the situation closely. Members of the public are urged to track Air Pollutant Index readings from the Department of Environment's online portal and adjust daily activities accordingly based on local conditions in their areas.
