Pope calls for respect toward women as Latin America grapples with femicide

Pope Francis has made a forceful appeal for male respect and responsibility in Latin American households, addressing the escalating violence against women that has claimed thousands of lives across the region. Speaking during his papal visit to Latin America and the Caribbean, the pontiff emphasised that husbands and family members must recognise and uphold the fundamental dignity and rights of women in their lives.

The appeal comes against a grim backdrop of gender-based violence. Data shows that approximately 20,000 women fell victim to femicide across Latin America and the Caribbean over a five-year period, representing a persistent and widespread crisis. The region recorded more than 3,800 femicide cases in 2024, underscoring the gravity of the ongoing threat to women's safety.

The Pope's message targeted cultural attitudes and family dynamics that allow violence against women to persist. He called for a transformation in how men view their relationships and responsibilities toward female family members, framing respect for women as a moral and religious imperative.

Femicide remains one of Latin America's most pressing human rights challenges, driven by deeply entrenched gender inequality, weak law enforcement, and cultural factors that have historically marginalised women's voices and agency. International organisations and local advocacy groups have long demanded stronger legal protections and cultural change to address the crisis.
