Port of Los Angeles seeks deeper Singapore partnership on green shipping

Eugene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, has signalled his intention to strengthen ties with Singapore as the two major maritime hubs tackle shared challenges in sustainability and technological advancement. The Port of Los Angeles, one of the world's busiest container terminals, already partners with the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) on decarbonisation initiatives and digitalisation efforts.

The partnership underscores a broader industry trend where leading ports recognise the need for coordinated action on environmental commitments. Both Singapore and the Port of Los Angeles have committed to reducing carbon emissions, with initiatives ranging from shore power infrastructure to alternative fuel adoption.

Digital transformation has become equally critical for port operations. The collaboration between the two authorities focuses on sharing best practices in areas such as cargo tracking, port management systems, and supply chain optimisation. Such partnerships enable ports to implement innovations more rapidly and cost-effectively.

Singapore's position as a global transshipment hub and the Port of Los Angeles' role as a gateway to North American markets make their alliance strategically significant. Enhanced cooperation between the two facilities could set standards for port operations across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, influencing practices among other major maritime centres.
