Post-meal walks help control blood sugar levels: AIIMS expert

Walking shortly after eating can be an effective strategy for managing blood sugar levels in diabetes patients, according to Dr. Rajesh Khargavat, a professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

The practice of post-meal walking aids in glucose control by facilitating better utilization of blood sugar by muscles and tissues, making it a simple yet valuable intervention for those managing the condition. The timing of the walk relative to meals plays an important role in maximizing its beneficial effects.

However, Dr. Khargavat cautioned that diabetes patients should avoid strenuous or high-intensity workouts following meals. Light to moderate-paced walking is recommended as the ideal approach, reducing the risk of complications while still providing meaningful blood sugar management benefits.

The recommendation aligns with broader medical guidance emphasizing lifestyle modifications as key components of diabetes care. Combined with dietary management and medication adherence, post-meal physical activity can contribute to improved glycemic control and overall health outcomes for patients.
