Potters see golden season as Karva Chauth demand surges ahead of festival

Potter communities across India are capitalizing on the festive season as orders for traditional clay pots, known as karvas, surge ahead of Karva Chauth. The handcrafted earthenware pieces, essential to the observance of this significant festival, have become a lucrative product for artisans this season.

Potters say karva prices vary between 20 and 50 rupees depending on design and craftsmanship. One potter reported receiving approximately 40,000 orders for karvas this season alone, reflecting the scale of demand driving business in pottery workshops.

The high volume of orders has stretched production capacity, with artisan families working continuously to meet commitments. Despite round-the-clock efforts from family members involved in the craft, fulfilling the backlog of orders remains a challenge as the festival approaches.

The seasonal surge underscores the continued cultural significance of traditional pottery in festival celebrations across India. For potter communities, the Karva Chauth season represents a critical period for annual earnings, with the rush typically lasting through the weeks preceding the festival.
