Power plants' coal stock depletion slows sharply in October

India's thermal power stations saw coal inventory drawdown more than halve in October as improved coal supplies and enhanced rail loading eased pressure on reserves. However, inventories remain below adequate levels, with more plants operating at critical stock thresholds.

Power plants' coal stock depletion slows sharply in October

Coal stock depletion at India's power generation plants slowed considerably in October, marking a significant shift from the accelerated drawdown seen in previous months. The Ministry of Power attributed the improvement to a combination of higher coal supplies from mining operations and increased rail loading capacity, which has helped replenish reserves at thermal power stations.

Despite the positive momentum, power plant coal inventories have yet to return to healthy levels. Stockpiles remain constrained across the sector, with many generating stations still grappling with sub-optimal reserves. The improvement in October's figures, while substantial, masks underlying vulnerabilities in the coal supply chain.

A growing concern has been the rising number of thermal power plants classified as operating at critical stock levels. This category—defined as stations with minimal buffer against supply disruptions—has expanded, indicating that while the pace of depletion has slowed, the overall inventory position remains precarious for significant portions of India's coal-fired capacity.

Government and power sector officials have stressed the need for sustained improvements in coal production and transportation infrastructure to build adequate safety stocks. The October data provides a window of opportunity, but industry analysts caution that further disruptions in mining or logistics could quickly reverse recent gains and reignite supply concerns across the thermal power generation base.
