Powerful earthquake kills 16 in Tibet; region sits on tectonic collision zone

A strong earthquake has devastated parts of Tibet, resulting in at least 16 deaths as the region grappled with the powerful seismic event. Footage captured during the tremor showed residents rushing from buildings and seeking shelter as the ground shook beneath them.

Tibet's vulnerability to major earthquakes stems from its geographical location on the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This convergent boundary is recognised as one of the world's most seismically active regions, generating frequent earthquakes of varying magnitudes throughout the year.

The mountainous terrain and sparse infrastructure in many Tibetan areas compound the challenges faced during seismic disasters. Relief and rescue operations were expected to continue as authorities assessed the full extent of damage across affected communities.

The collision between the Indian plate, which moves northward, and the Eurasian plate has created the Himalayan mountain range and generates continuous tectonic stress. Scientists have long identified this region as a zone requiring heightened earthquake preparedness and monitoring.
