Prakasam Barrage opens all gates as cyclone swells Krishna waters
Authorities at Prakasam Barrage in Andhra Pradesh have opened all 70 gates to manage surging water levels triggered by Cyclone Murasu. The barrage is releasing approximately 71,000 cusecs into the Krishna River following heavy rainfall across the catchment area.

The decision to fully open the barrage gates comes as heavy precipitation from Cyclone Murasu pushed inflow levels beyond manageable thresholds at the structure located on the Krishna River. The barrage, a critical water management facility, was operated at full capacity to prevent overflow and potential damage to surrounding infrastructure.
The surge in water levels is primarily attributed to heavy rainfall across NTR district, which feeds into the Krishna system through tributary streams. The Keesara, Munneru, and Budameru streams, which drain the rain-affected region, have become major contributors to the elevated inflows into the barrage.
The release of over 71,000 cusecs represents a significant volume of water being channeled downstream through the Krishna River. Authorities have maintained heightened alert status at the barrage as the cyclonic system continues to impact the region. The operation demonstrates the critical role such structures play in managing water flow during extreme weather events and protecting communities from potential flooding.
Residents and authorities downstream have been advised to exercise caution as water levels in the Krishna River remain elevated due to the ongoing releases from Prakasam Barrage.
