PRC, DOLE launch probe into surgeon over fatal malpractice allegations

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) have pledged to conduct a full investigation into a plastic surgeon and medical facility accused of malpractice resulting in patient fatalities. The commitment came after Senator Raffy Tulfo brought the allegations to light during Wednesday's Senate Committee on Finance hearing on the 2027 national budget.

Tulfo presented multiple cases suggesting negligence at the surgeon's clinic, with reports indicating that several patients had died following procedures. The senator's intervention prompted assurances from both regulatory bodies that they would examine the allegations thoroughly and take appropriate action if warranted.

The PRC, which oversees the licensing and conduct of medical professionals in the Philippines, typically handles disciplinary matters against doctors found to have violated professional standards. The DOLE's involvement suggests concerns may also extend to workplace safety and labor regulation violations at the medical facility in question.

The investigation is expected to determine whether the surgeon and clinic are culpable of gross negligence or willful misconduct that endangered patients' lives. Depending on findings, the PRC could pursue sanctions ranging from warnings to revocation of the surgeon's medical license.
