The President has instructed relevant government agencies to develop and execute a comprehensive traffic management strategy for the Anuradhapura Sacred City, a major pilgrimage and tourism destination in the North Central Province.
The initiative addresses growing congestion challenges that have affected both residents and visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which contains some of Sri Lanka's most revered Buddhist monuments and archaeological treasures.
Officials are expected to explore multiple approaches to ease traffic flow, potentially including improved road infrastructure, enhanced public transportation options, and better traffic regulation systems throughout the historic zone.
Anuradhapura, home to the sacred Bodhi tree and numerous ancient stupas, attracts considerable vehicular traffic throughout the year. The congestion has raised concerns among local residents and heritage conservation groups regarding both urban mobility and the preservation of the site's cultural significance.
