The Colombo Municipal Council briefed officials at the Presidential Secretariat on the causes and impact of flash floods that struck the capital on Friday afternoon, leading to the directive to form a specialized emergency response unit.
According to municipal authorities, the flooding was triggered by exceptionally heavy rainfall measuring approximately 129 millimeters within a single hour. This concentrated downpour significantly exceeded the capacity of Colombo's existing drainage systems, which were designed to handle substantially lower rainfall volumes.
The formation of the Special Emergency Response Task Force represents efforts to enhance the city's preparedness for extreme weather events and improve coordination between relevant authorities. The task force is expected to evaluate current drainage infrastructure and recommend measures to mitigate future flood risks in the densely populated urban area.
The incident has prompted renewed focus on urban water management systems in Colombo, highlighting vulnerabilities in infrastructure designed under different rainfall patterns. Authorities are examining both immediate response protocols and long-term solutions to protect residents and minimize disruption to city operations during severe weather events.
