The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines says an apology from Vice President Sara Duterte's defense counsel does not excuse attempts to discourage media coverage of public officials' suspicious transactions.

MANILA—The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) has rejected an apology from lawyer Mark Vinluan, Vice President Sara Duterte's legal representative, over what he characterized as "unintended" intimidation directed at members of the press.

In a statement released Wednesday, the NUJP emphasized that journalists' constitutional right to report on potentially corrupt dealings and questionable financial transactions involving government officials cannot be compromised by such apologies or warnings. The union said acceptance of the lawyer's explanation would effectively undermine press freedom and accountability mechanisms essential to democratic governance.

Vinluan had previously issued warnings to journalists covering matters related to the Vice President, prompting the NUJP to formally object to what it described as an attempt to restrict legitimate reportorial activities. The journalists' organization maintained that media scrutiny of public officials' conduct remains a cornerstone of democratic accountability, regardless of the intended or unintended nature of any cautionary statements.

The incident underscores ongoing tensions between media organizations and government representatives over the scope and boundaries of press freedom in the Philippines. The NUJP continues to advocate for unrestricted access to information and the right to investigate matters of public interest without intimidation or legal pressure.
