The Prime Minister undertook a comprehensive tour of the Sundarbans via helicopter, gaining an aerial perspective of the vast mangrove ecosystem that spans across southwestern Bangladesh. Following the aerial survey, the PM traveled by road through Dacope to reach Mongla, a major port town in Bagerhat district.
The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and crucial biodiversity hotspot, covers approximately 10,000 square kilometers and serves as a vital habitat for endangered Bengal tigers, spotted deer, and numerous bird species. The region is also integral to the livelihoods of thousands of local communities dependent on forest resources and fishing.
The visit underscored the government's commitment to monitoring conservation efforts and infrastructural development in the Sundarbans area. Mongla, located at the confluence of the Passur and Sundari rivers, serves as an important maritime gateway and industrial hub for the region.
The aerial tour enabled a broad assessment of forest conditions and land use patterns across the expansive mangrove ecosystem, while the subsequent ground journey facilitated direct engagement with local administrative and development officials in Mongla.
