Probe launched into ₹4-crore fraud allegation against former Tamil Nadu minister

A formal investigation has been ordered into allegations that former minister C. Vijayabaskar fraudulently obtained ₹4.5 crore from an AIADMK party candidate, the Madras High Court was informed on Tuesday.
Dhana Vimal, the AIADMK's candidate from the Alangudi constituency, lodged the complaint accusing Vijayabaskar of taking the funds under the pretext of helping him demonstrate financial means to meet election-related expenses. The complaint alleged that the money was obtained through deception, with no legitimate purpose fulfilled.
The High Court took cognizance of the matter and directed the appropriate authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry into the allegations. Court officials indicated that the investigation would examine the circumstances surrounding the financial transaction and determine whether criminal proceedings should be initiated.
Vijayabaskar, a prominent AIADMK politician, has not yet issued a public statement regarding the allegations. The outcome of the inquiry could carry significant political implications in Tamil Nadu, where the AIADMK is a major political force.
