MANILA — Lawmakers from the progressive Makabayan coalition moved Tuesday to spotlight cases of student repression nationwide, urging state institutions to take corrective action. The appeal underscores growing concerns about constraints on student activism and political expression in educational institutions across the country.
Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co, ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio, and Gabriela Women's Party Rep. Sarah Elago spearheaded the initiative, emphasizing students' constitutional right to dissent on matters of public concern, particularly those involving alleged corruption and government malfeasance.
The three legislators underscored that student activism constitutes a vital component of democratic participation and accountability. They stressed that young people should be protected from intimidation, harassment, or disciplinary action simply for exercising their right to peaceful protest and expression.
The call comes amid recurring reports of administrative measures taken against student activists, ranging from expulsion threats to restrictions on campus organizing activities. The lawmakers' intervention reflects persistent tension between educational institutions and student movements advocating for policy reforms and transparency in government.
