Health professionals are increasingly warning Indians about the dangers of prolonged sitting, citing a marked increase in spinal and musculoskeletal disorders linked to sedentary lifestyles and poor postural habits.
Dr. Lalit Kumar, a spine health specialist, noted that continuous sitting combined with excessive mobile phone use places considerable strain on neck and spinal muscles, potentially leading to chronic pain and intervertebral disc problems. The modern work environment, characterized by desk-bound jobs and increased screen time, has accelerated these concerns among both office workers and students.
To mitigate spinal damage, experts recommend changing sitting positions every 30 minutes, performing light stretching exercises, and maintaining proper posture throughout the day. These preventive measures are considered essential for maintaining long-term spinal health and reducing the risk of degenerative disc conditions.
Dr. Kumar emphasized that awareness and early intervention through ergonomic adjustments and regular movement breaks could significantly reduce the prevalence of spine-related ailments. Healthcare practitioners suggest combining postural corrections with consistent physical activity to ensure optimal spinal health and overall wellbeing.
