Proposed Amazon data centre in Thane faces resident opposition

Opposition to Amazon's proposed data centre in Thane has intensified, with the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction warning that the massive facility would render the city unliveable. The project, valued at approximately ₹7,203.29 crore, has drawn sustained protests from residents over recent months.

The e-commerce company's data centre development is planned across 53.73 acres in Thane, a densely populated city in Maharashtra's industrial belt east of Mumbai. Local communities have raised concerns about the environmental and infrastructural impact of the large-scale facility on the region.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders have thrown their weight behind resident concerns, leveraging the opposition to highlight what they characterise as threats to the city's habitability. The party has positioned itself as a defender of local interests against large-scale corporate projects that could alter the area's character.

The project now faces a significant political challenge as opposition gains momentum among residents and political parties. Amazon has not yet responded publicly to the latest round of objections, though community consultations may continue as the proposal moves through necessary regulatory approvals.
