Proposed Trans-Borneo Railway to Connect Sarawak's Key Cities
A new railway corridor under consideration would link Sarawak's major population centres and port facilities, potentially transforming regional connectivity and trade flows across northern Borneo.

Plans for a Trans-Borneo Railway have advanced with the recommendation of a proposed route that would integrate Sarawak's principal divisions through a unified transport network. The corridor is designed to traverse the state's key urban and commercial hubs, creating direct rail connectivity across previously disconnected regions.
The recommended alignment would commence in Kuching, the state capital, before extending through Samarahan and Sri Aman in the central region. The route would then proceed eastward through Sarikei and Sibu, continuing to Bintulu and terminating in Miri on Sarawak's northern coast. The proposal includes a section through Brunei before re-entering Sarawak at Limbang, creating an international corridor component.
The project is expected to enhance economic integration by linking major ports and industrial centres, potentially facilitating increased commodity trade and passenger movement throughout the region. Proponents argue the railway would improve transport efficiency and reduce reliance on road infrastructure while supporting long-term economic development across Sarawak's divisions.
The initiative represents a significant infrastructure undertaking for the region, though implementation timelines and funding mechanisms have yet to be formally detailed. Further assessments and feasibility studies are anticipated to advance the proposal toward potential development stages.
