MANILA — Prosecutors voiced their disapproval on Tuesday of the defense team's handling of witness examination in the ongoing malversation case involving former Ako Bicol Representative Zaldy Co and an associate, characterizing the approach as inconsistent and improperly prepared.
The prosecution objected to what it characterized as a "trial and error" methodology employed by the defense counsel regarding the presentation of their final witness. The criticism centered on apparent inconsistencies in how the defense had structured its questioning and evidence strategy.
The defense lawyer disputed the prosecution's characterization, pushing back against the assertion that their legal approach lacked proper preparation or direction.
Despite the contentious exchange between the opposing counsels, the Sandiganbayan Sixth Division resolved the procedural dispute by permitting the defense to present testimony from witness Jose Sumangil. The decision allowed the proceedings to continue without further delay.
The malversation case against Co and his co-accused continues to move through the specialized anti-graft court, with both sides advancing their respective arguments on the charges of misappropriation of public funds.
