MANILA — The prosecution will continue its case against Vice President Sara Duterte regardless of speculation about her political future, according to Bicol representative Terry Ridon, a vocal member of the impeachment panel.
Ridon made the statement during a press briefing following the second day of Duterte's impeachment trial before the Senate on Monday. His remarks came as reports circulated that the Vice President had sought a meeting with President Marcos and might be considering stepping down from office.
"Our goal remains unchanged," Ridon said, underscoring the prosecution's determination to present its full case against Duterte. The impeachment proceedings, initiated by the House of Representatives, center on allegations of culpability, betrayal of public trust, and gross misconduct in office.
The Vice President has denied all charges against her, and her legal team has mounted a vigorous defense during the Senate trial. The resignation rumors have added another layer of uncertainty to the political crisis that has gripped the administration in recent weeks.
The outcome of the impeachment trial could have significant implications for Philippine politics as the nation prepares for future elections. The Senate will ultimately determine whether sufficient grounds exist to remove Duterte from office.
