Public Health Inspectors Launch Nationwide Token Strike

Public Health Inspectors have commenced a token strike across the island on Wednesday, marking a significant escalation in their ongoing labour dispute. The industrial action involves a coordinated withdrawal of services by PHIs nationwide, aimed at drawing attention to their demands and pressing concerns.

The strike follows previous rounds of negotiations and representations that the union contends have yielded insufficient progress. PHIs, who play a critical role in disease surveillance, environmental health monitoring, and public health enforcement across Sri Lanka's health system, have cited various grievances ranging from service conditions to professional recognition.

The token strike format, involving periodic work stoppages rather than a complete cessation of duties, is typically employed to minimise disruption to essential health services while maintaining pressure on authorities to address workers' concerns. Public health officials have not yet issued formal statements regarding contingency arrangements.

The action underscores growing tensions within Sri Lanka's healthcare workforce, with multiple cadres of health workers voicing dissatisfaction over recent years. PHI unions have indicated they are prepared to intensify the strike should their demands remain unaddressed.
