CALAPAN CITY — Officials in Puerto Princesa are examining cloud seeding as a potential strategy to increase water availability for the city, with concerns mounting over the extended impact of the current Super El Niño phenomenon.

The Puerto Princesa City Water District initiated discussions on the weather modification technique after the Bureau of Soils and Water Management of the Department of Agriculture assessed local conditions and suggested the intervention as a viable option for water supply augmentation.

Cloud seeding, which involves dispersing substances into clouds to encourage precipitation, has been employed in various parts of the Philippines during periods of severe drought. The technique aims to supplement natural rainfall and help maintain adequate water reserves during extended dry periods.

The move reflects growing concerns among local authorities about the potential severity of the ongoing Super El Niño, which has been characterized by reduced rainfall and higher temperatures across much of the region. Water district officials have signaled their commitment to exploring multiple approaches to ensure adequate supply for the city's residents and commercial needs during the anticipated drought period.
