CALAPAN CITY — Puerto Princesa City is bracing for a possible spike in grass fires as scorching temperatures linked to super El Niño conditions persist across the region, local officials said Friday.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) has activated emergency protocols and positioned firefighting equipment on standby to respond swiftly to fire incidents, according to a statement from the Provincial Information Office Mimaropa-Palawan. CDRRMO chief Earl Timbancaya emphasized the office's readiness to address the anticipated increase in fire-related emergencies during the extreme heat period.
The Philippines has experienced intensified heat and dry conditions as part of the broader super El Niño phenomenon affecting Southeast Asia. Grassland fires pose significant risks to communities and agricultural areas, with dry vegetation becoming highly combustible under elevated temperatures.
Local authorities are advising residents to exercise caution when conducting outdoor activities and to report any signs of fire immediately to emergency responders. Community cooperation in fire prevention and early warning systems remains critical as the region continues to grapple with adverse weather conditions.
