Pune anganwadi worker's termination overturned following public backlash

A tribal anganwadi worker at Numberwadi in Ambegaon taluka, Pune district, has had her termination decision reversed following widespread public outcry. Reshma, also known as Devyani Pardhi, was dismissed after she posted videos on social media highlighting quality issues with food supplies distributed to her anganwadi centre.

In her posts, Pardhi demonstrated that white dried peas supplied to the centre remained uncooked despite being pressure cooked for multiple cycles, up to 10 whistles in a pressure cooker. The videos drew significant public attention and raised concerns about the standard of provisions being used for nutrition programmes at anganwadi centres serving tribal communities.

The public response to the worker's disclosure prompted authorities to reconsider the termination order. Officials acknowledged the concerns raised about supply quality and moved to reinstate Pardhi to her position. The reversal marks a significant moment for frontline nutrition workers who have often faced resistance when reporting supply and quality issues through public channels.

Anganwadi centres, which form the backbone of India's early childhood care and nutrition programme, depend heavily on the quality of supplies distributed to beneficiaries. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in the supply chain and the importance of workers' ability to flag such concerns without fear of repercussion.
