Pune High Court Reduces Alcohol Ban During Ganesh Festival From 10 To 2 Days

The Pune High Court has intervened to scale back a blanket alcohol sales ban during the city's annual Ganesh festival, reducing the prohibition period from 10 days to just two days following representations from the hospitality and retail liquor sectors.

Hotel owner associations and wine shop proprietors had approached the court challenging the Pune Collector's order that sought to restrict alcohol sales for the entire duration of the extended Ganesh Chaturthi festival period. The associations argued that the lengthy ban imposed undue hardship on businesses and their employees during a critical commercial period.

The High Court's decision to curtail the ban reflects a balance between the administration's intent to maintain the sanctity of religious festivities and the legitimate commercial interests of affected business establishments. The revised two-day restriction is expected to allow businesses to resume normal operations while still respecting the cultural significance of the festival celebrations.
