Air quality across India has deteriorated sharply, with cities in Punjab dominating the list of most polluted locations. Bathinda tops the rankings with an Air Quality Index of 737, while neighbouring Faridkot recorded a reading of 692, both well into the hazardous category that poses serious health risks to residents.
The severe pollution levels indicate a combination of factors typical to the season, including stubble burning, vehicular emissions, and industrial activity. Health authorities have cautioned residents in affected areas to limit outdoor exposure and take protective measures.
Patiala rounds out the top three most polluted cities, continuing a pattern of deteriorating air quality across northern India. The readings, which classify air as hazardous when exceeding 400 on the AQI scale, have prompted local administrations to consider contingency measures.
Residents in these regions are advised to wear N95 masks when venturing outdoors and reduce physical activity. Schools and workplaces in severely affected areas may face operational challenges as authorities monitor the situation closely.
