Punjab authorities have extended the detention of Aleema Khan, Noreen Niazi and Dr. Uzma Khan by 30 days, keeping them held at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore under provisions of a public safety law. The three women, related to Imran Khan, the former prime minister and chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, have been in custody as political tensions in the country remain elevated.
PTI lawmaker Moonis Elahi has characterised the detention order as politically motivated, claiming the provincial government is using legal mechanisms to target supporters and associates of the opposition leader. The party has previously alleged that state institutions are being weaponised against its members following Khan's ouster from office in April 2022.
The detention of family members of prominent political figures has intensified scrutiny on Pakistan's application of public order laws. Rights groups have expressed concerns about the use of such legislation in cases involving political opponents, though officials contend the detentions serve legitimate security purposes.
The development comes amid broader tensions between the PTI and Pakistan's ruling coalition government, which has faced pressure from Khan's party and its supporters demanding fresh elections and policy changes. The case highlights the fractious state of Pakistani politics and recurring disputes over the use of administrative detention powers.
