A man in Punjab consumed poison at a police station on Tuesday following a dispute with officers over alleged demands for bribes, authorities said. The incident occurred after the individual accused the station house officer, police clerk, and an administrative official of harassment and extortion.
According to the complainant, the officials had demanded between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 to prepare and process a required report. The man reportedly ingested the poison in protest at the station itself, triggering an emergency response.
Police personnel administered first aid before the man was rushed to a nearby medical facility for further treatment. His current condition remains unclear.
The police station has categorically denied the allegations of demanding bribes or harassing the individual. An investigation into the matter is reportedly underway to determine the exact sequence of events and verify claims made by both parties.
