Punjab records over 3,300 stubble burning cases, imposes Rs 60.6 lakh in fines

Punjab's crackdown on stubble burning has intensified as the state recorded more than 3,300 violations during the current agricultural season. The cases filed through November 7 have attracted cumulative fines of Rs 60.6 lakh, though recovery of penalties remains incomplete at Rs 32.5 lakh.

Tarntaran district leads the state in the number of infractions, accounting for 623 cases of illegal crop residue burning. Patiala follows with 196 reported incidents. The violations primarily occur during the post-harvest period when farmers clear fields before sowing the next crop.

Authorities continue pursuing enforcement action through multiple channels, including the filing of First Information Reports (FIRs), red entry registrations, and formal notices against offenders. The multi-pronged approach reflects efforts to combat air pollution linked to stubble burning, which significantly degrades air quality across Punjab and neighboring regions during winter months.

The state government has maintained strict vigilance to deter farmers from resorting to crop burning, a practice banned under environmental protection guidelines. Agricultural extension services have promoted alternative residue management techniques to reduce violations in coming seasons.
