Punjab's rural heartland reshapes AAP's electoral fortunes
Shifting voter sentiment in Punjab's Malwa and Doaba regions is fundamentally altering the state's political landscape. Together, these two areas control over 82 per cent of assembly seats, making rural mood swings decisive for any party's electoral prospects.

Punjab's electoral dynamics are being redrawn by changing attitudes in its rural heartland, with two regions emerging as kingmakers in the state's political contest. Malwa, the agricultural belt in central and southern Punjab, dominates the state assembly with 69 of 117 seats—nearly 59 per cent of total strength. This concentration of constituencies gives the region outsized influence over which party forms government. When combined with the 23 seats held by Doaba, the two regions account for 92 assembly constituencies, representing over 82 per cent of Punjab's legislative strength.
The Aam Aadmi Party, which swept to power in 2022, finds itself particularly vulnerable to shifts in rural sentiment. Malwa and Doaba constituencies are predominantly agrarian, and voter priorities in these areas have historically centered on farming-related issues, agricultural policies, and rural development. Any party seeking to retain or capture power in Punjab must secure substantial support across these regions.
Analysts note that rural voter behavior in both Malwa and Doaba has become increasingly volatile, driven by factors ranging from agricultural distress to governance performance. The AAP's ability to address farmer concerns and deliver on rural development promises will significantly determine its electoral prospects. Meanwhile, opposition parties are actively engaging with rural constituencies, sensing opportunities to capitalize on any dissatisfaction.
The concentration of political power in these two regions means that election outcomes in Punjab are effectively decided by rural voter sentiment rather than urban centers. Both major parties are intensifying their focus on Malwa and Doaba constituencies as the next electoral cycle approaches, recognizing that control of these areas translates directly into control of the state assembly.
