Punjab stubble burning cases surge to 2,787 as enforcement tightens

Punjab's battle against stubble burning has intensified, with authorities documenting 2,787 cases of farm fires across the state during the current season. Tarn Taran district has emerged as a significant hotspot, contributing 586 incidents—representing approximately 21 percent of the state's total cases.

Enforcement action has resulted in substantial financial penalties aimed at deterring the illegal practice. Authorities have imposed environmental compensation fines totalling ₹46 lakh across 914 cases, with recovery efforts already securing more than half that amount at ₹24 lakh. The financial penalties are meant to discourage farmers from resorting to stubble burning, a practice that significantly contributes to regional air pollution during autumn months.

The spike in registered cases underscores stepped-up vigilance by environmental and agricultural authorities across Punjab. The state government has prioritized enforcement against stubble burning, particularly in districts bordering the National Capital Region, where agricultural burning has been linked to severe air quality deterioration in Delhi and surrounding areas.

Punjab continues to grapple with balancing agricultural interests against environmental concerns, as farmers traditionally resort to burning crop residue as a cost-effective disposal method. Alternative waste management solutions, including subsidised machinery for crop residue management, remain part of the state's ongoing strategy to address the issue.
