Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a new insurance mechanism and joint grain market initiative among BRICS nations, seeking to strengthen economic cooperation among developing economies amid Western sanctions.

At the conclusion of the 18th BRICS summit, Putin outlined economic proposals designed to foster growth across the grouping and the broader Global South, while reducing reliance on Western financial systems.
The Russian leader's proposals come as Moscow faces severe restrictions on its crude oil export capabilities. Western nations including the G-7, European Union and UK have barred their insurers from covering shipments of Russian oil that exceed a set price cap, directly impacting Moscow's energy sales.
Putin emphasised that BRICS members possess the capacity to operate independently of external pressures. "We have independent routes for moving capital, labour and technologies," he stated, underscoring the bloc's potential for self-sufficiency.
The proposed initiatives reflect Russia's broader strategy to pivot eastward and strengthen economic partnerships with nations outside the Western-dominated financial architecture. The insurance mechanism and grain market collaboration are intended to provide alternative frameworks for trade among member states, shielding them from geopolitical pressures targeting any single nation.
The proposals signal Russia's determination to deepen its role within BRICS despite international sanctions related to its military operations in Ukraine.
