Python seized during Hyderabad Ganesh festival procession

Animal protection authorities and police in Hyderabad seized a protected Indian rock python and poultry from a dance troupe performing during the city's Ganesh Chaturthi immersion celebrations. The Greater Hyderabad Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GHSPCA) and law enforcement intervened to rescue the reptile, which was being displayed illegally as part of a street performance. The python was subsequently transferred to the state forest department after veterinary assessment revealed a mouth infection requiring treatment. A handler associated with the dance performance was apprehended during the operation. The GHSPCA has called for strict action against the unauthorized use of protected species in public performances, citing violations of wildlife protection regulations. The incident comes as authorities intensify efforts to prevent animal exploitation during major religious festivals. Police and forest department officials have launched a joint investigation into the matter to determine the source of the python and establish liability. Officials said such incidents highlight the need for heightened vigilance during large public gatherings when animal trafficking networks often attempt to capitalize on festive crowds.
