Quad foreign ministers agree on AI, minerals cooperation framework

The four-nation Quad grouping moved to deepen cooperation across emerging technological and strategic domains during its third foreign ministers' conclave, according to statements from the participating governments. The meeting brought together India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar alongside his counterparts from the United States, Japan and Australia to chart collaborative pathways on issues of regional significance.

Among key outcomes, the ministers endorsed a framework to advance trusted artificial intelligence capabilities throughout the Indo-Pacific, backed by an initial commitment of $85 million. The initiative reflects growing concern among the four democracies to ensure that AI development aligns with shared values and security interests in a region of strategic importance.

Critical minerals emerged as another priority area for coordinated action. The ministers recognised the necessity of securing and diversifying supply chains for essential minerals required for renewable energy transition and advanced manufacturing across the Indo-Pacific. Jaishankar and his counterparts also emphasised maritime security cooperation, underscoring the importance of freedom of navigation and adherence to international law in regional waters.

The meeting highlighted the Quad's evolution from a loose diplomatic grouping to a substantive coalition addressing transnational challenges. Officials indicated that terrorism and maritime domain awareness would remain focal points for continued engagement among the four nations.
