Quezon City reports sharp rise in leptospirosis cases after monsoon rains

Quezon City's health surveillance division confirmed a marked increase in leptospirosis cases during the monsoon-driven flooding that swept through the metropolis in mid-August. Between August 5 and August 18, health authorities documented 62 cases of the disease, which is transmitted to humans through contact with water contaminated by infected animal urine.

The spike correlates directly with the enhanced southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, which brought sustained heavy rains and widespread flooding to low-lying areas of the city. The Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division released the figures on Thursday, noting the severity of the outbreak during the weather emergency.

Leptospirosis, a potentially fatal bacterial infection, typically surges during and after prolonged rainy seasons when floodwaters inundate residential areas and increase contact with contaminated environments. The five recorded deaths underscore the serious public health threat posed by the disease during such weather events.

Health officials typically advise residents in flood-prone areas to avoid wading through flood waters, maintain proper hygiene, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as fever, headache, and muscle pain develop. The disease requires prompt antibiotic treatment to prevent progression to severe kidney and liver complications.
