Quezon pursues geographical indication status for lambanog liquor

LUCENA CITY — Provincial officials in Quezon are advancing efforts to secure Geographical Indication (GI) status for lambanog, the region's signature coconut distillate, in a bid to protect its cultural heritage and enhance commercial prospects for local manufacturers.

The drive, branded as "Tatak at Pinagmulan: Tungo sa Geographical Indication (GI) ng Lambanog ng Quezon" or "Brand and Origin: Toward Geographical Indication for Quezon Lambanog," represents a strategic move to establish legal protection for the product's identity and manufacturing origins.

Geographical Indication certification would distinguish lambanog as an authentic Quezon product, reinforcing its market position and allowing producers to command premium pricing based on the product's geographical and cultural provenance. The status also provides legal recourse against counterfeit or misrepresented versions of the spirit.

Local stakeholders view the GI designation as instrumental in expanding business opportunities beyond traditional markets, potentially opening doors to export channels and broader consumer recognition. The initiative underscores efforts by provincial authorities to capitalize on the region's agricultural heritage while supporting small-scale and medium-sized producers who have traditionally manufactured the coconut-based liquor.
