LUCENA CITY — Quezon province's diverse ecosystems remain essential sanctuaries for migratory birds traveling across Asia, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The DENR-Calabarzon regional office released findings from the 2026 Asian Waterbird Census on Friday, which tracked bird populations at designated monitoring sites throughout the province. The survey recorded 229 individual birds representing 16 different species, underscoring the ecological importance of Quezon's natural habitats.

Wetlands, rice paddies and coastal areas have proven particularly valuable for avian populations, providing feeding grounds and resting areas during migration seasons. These habitats support both resident and transient bird species as they navigate their annual migration routes across the region.

The DENR emphasized the significance of preserving these natural areas to maintain biodiversity and support the survival of migratory species. Conservation efforts in Quezon contribute to broader regional environmental protection initiatives across Southeast Asia.
