Quick-commerce dark stores face food safety scrutiny as violations mount

Food safety violations at quick-commerce dark stores have triggered alarm among industry distributors, who have petitioned regulators to strengthen oversight of the fast-growing delivery sector. The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) has written to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) seeking tighter controls after a series of incidents involving rodent infestations, pest contamination, and expired products at rapid-delivery fulfillment centers.

The dark stores, which operate as inventory hubs for same-day and next-day delivery services, have emerged as critical nodes in India's quick-commerce boom. However, their operational model—designed for speed rather than traditional retail standards—has raised questions about compliance with food safety protocols. Distributors argue that the accelerated delivery timelines are creating gaps in quality checks and warehouse maintenance.

The AICPDF's intervention reflects growing concerns that the regulatory framework has not kept pace with the expansion of quick-commerce infrastructure. Current FSSAI oversight mechanisms were largely designed for conventional retail and warehousing operations, leaving dark stores in a gray area with inconsistent monitoring. The federation has urged the authority to conduct comprehensive audits and establish specific compliance standards tailored to dark store operations.

Quick-commerce platforms have transformed consumer shopping habits across Indian metros, but the sector's rapid scaling has outpaced safety infrastructure. Industry observers note that without immediate corrective action, food safety lapses could undermine consumer confidence in the delivery model and prompt broader regulatory crackdowns affecting the entire sector.
