Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to hinder protesting students, asserting that they represent the true voice of India. The remarks came during a meeting with injured student activists at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, including members of the party's youth wing NSUI.
The students had been injured during recent demonstrations against the Chief Election Commissioner over alleged irregularities in a recruitment process. During the meeting, several protesters detailed accounts of what they described as harsh treatment by police personnel during their detention.
Gandhi assured the students that the Congress would provide full support and accountability for actions taken against them. "Action will be taken against all, from the Prime Minister to the police constable, who acted against protesting students," he stated. He described the student activists as the nation's "lions and lionesses," particularly praising a female protester for her courage and resilience despite alleged mistreatment.
The Congress leader emphasised that the party would stand firmly behind the student movement, positioning civil participation and democratic dissent as essential to India's democratic fabric.
