Rahul Gandhi Opposes IDBI Bank Disinvestment; FM Sitharaman Counters

The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha has written to IDBI Bank staff, asserting that public sector banks are instruments for nation-building rather than assets for sale. Gandhi's intervention comes as the government pursues the disinvestment of the state-owned lender to a Canadian firm, a move that has triggered employee concerns and political opposition.

In his communication to bank employees, Gandhi questioned the rationale for divesting a profitable institution, framing the issue as a matter of public interest. His position aligns with wider Congress criticism that strategic public assets should remain under state control.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman responded sharply to the opposition criticism, contending that previous Congress-led governments had treated banks and financial institutions as "personal entities." She alleged that Congress administrations had pressured bank officials to relax lending norms and extend credit beyond prudent practices.

Sitharaman cited historical precedent to support her argument, pointing to the removal of former SBI chairman R K Talwar in 1976 during Indira Gandhi's tenure. According to the Finance Minister, Talwar's dismissal followed his resistance to political pressure to ease lending standards for entities connected to Sanjay Gandhi.

The IDBI disinvestment row reflects deeper tensions between the government's privatisation agenda and opposition concerns about dismantling public sector institutions. The controversy underscores divergent political philosophies on the role of state-owned enterprises in India's economic framework.
