Union Minister Suresh Gopi conducted a review of infrastructure and facilities at Kottayam railway station on Tuesday as preparations intensify for the annual Sabarimala pilgrimage season. The inspection focused on assessing current capabilities to handle the anticipated surge in devotee traffic expected during the festive period.
Gopi emphasized the need for enhanced rail connectivity to the renowned hill temple in Kerala. He indicated that the railway ministry would work toward developing suitable rail routes that could better serve pilgrims undertaking the journey to Sabarimala.
The proposed Angamaly-Sabarimala railway line emerged as a key focus area during the minister's assessment. Officials discussed potential alignment and feasibility of the project, which could significantly reduce travel time and improve accessibility for the large number of devotees who visit the shrine annually.
The Sabarimala temple, one of South India's most visited pilgrimage sites, witnesses substantial passenger traffic during its key seasons. Railway authorities have been exploring infrastructure improvements to manage the seasonal surge while maintaining service quality for regular commuters in the region.
