Railway Board green-lights long-awaited MRTS merger with Chennai Metro

The Railway Board's approval marks a significant milestone for Chennai's public transportation infrastructure, culminating a lengthy bureaucratic process that began in January 2011 when the Tamil Nadu government first proposed the consolidation. The merger had remained pending for over a decade and a half before receiving formal clearance.

Under the approved integration framework, the MRTS will be consolidated under the operational control of Chennai Metro Rail Limited. The transition is structured over a 24-month period during which CMRL will progressively assume full responsibility for train operations, fleet management, and passenger services currently managed separately.

The consolidation is expected to streamline administration, eliminate operational redundancies, and improve service coordination across Chennai's rapid transit network. By bringing both systems under unified management, authorities anticipate enhanced efficiency in scheduling, maintenance, and resource allocation.

The merger represents a strategic reorganization of the city's metro infrastructure, which has expanded significantly since the original proposal was filed over a decade ago. The phased transition approach allows for minimal disruption to commuter services while establishing unified operational protocols across the integrated network.
