The Railway Protection Force (RPF) intercepted a consignment of ganja weighing approximately 6 kilograms at Thrissur railway station on Friday, officials said. The contraband, valued at around ₹3 lakh, was recovered during a routine inspection operation. A 19-year-old resident of West Bengal was apprehended at the station following the discovery.
During preliminary questioning, the suspect revealed that he had been hired as a courier for the consignment. According to his statement, he was promised a payment of ₹20,000 to transport and deliver the ganja to a contact in Aluva, a town in Ernakulam district. The arrangement appeared to be part of a larger drug distribution network operating across state lines.
The seizure marks a significant interception in the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb narcotics trafficking through railway networks in Kerala. The RPF has intensified its surveillance operations at major railway terminals in response to increasing smuggling attempts. The seized ganja has been transferred to the custody of local narcotics authorities for further investigation.
The arrested individual has been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Investigations are underway to identify and locate other individuals involved in the smuggling operation, including those who organized the consignment and the intended recipient in Aluva.
