Railway unions to stage two-day strike mid-September

The Joint Railway Trade Unions have decided to proceed with their planned two-day token strike scheduled for September 17 and 18, union officials confirmed on Thursday. The decision to move forward with the industrial action marks an escalation in ongoing labour tensions within the national rail service.
The strike has been called against the backdrop of unresolved disputes concerning the position of the General Manager of Railways. Trade union representatives stated that negotiations on the matter have reached an impasse, leaving the unions with limited options to press their demands.
Joint Railway Trade Union Co-Convenor Kasun Chamara Jayasekara announced the confirmation of strike dates, signalling the unions' commitment to their planned protest action. The two-day stoppage is expected to significantly disrupt rail services across the country during the period.
The token strike represents a measured escalation by the unions, stopping short of an indefinite cessation of operations. Railway authorities and union leadership have not indicated any further negotiations scheduled before the strike commences.
