Rain-harvesting infrastructure revives parched tanks in Annamayya

Three days of rainfall have delivered fresh inflows into tanks across Annamayya district, offering a temporary respite in a region grappling with severe water deficits. The district has received precipitation 57 percent below normal levels, creating acute challenges for agricultural operations and water supply.

District officials attribute the improved situation to infrastructure upgrades undertaken through the Jaladhara programme, a water resource management initiative focused on enhancing rainwater capture and utilization. The scheme has involved restoration of feeder channels, supply canals, and stream linkages that were previously neglected or damaged.

These rehabilitated channels are now efficiently directing rainwater from recent showers toward water bodies and underground aquifers, maximizing the benefit of limited precipitation. The improved infrastructure enables better groundwater recharge, which officials view as critical for sustaining agricultural activities during the ongoing dry spell.

Local authorities say the restoration work has demonstrated measurable results in converting modest rainfall into tangible water availability. However, officials cautioned that sustained and above-normal rainfall would be necessary to substantially alleviate the district's water stress and replenish depleted reservoirs to adequate levels.
