Rain helps ease Philippine air quality concerns from Indonesia fires

MANILA — Recent rainfall has helped mitigate air pollution stemming from Indonesian wildfires that have periodically affected air quality across the Philippines, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Pagasa specialist John Manalo noted in remarks Friday that precipitation is a key factor in lowering concentrations of airborne pollutants linked to the fires. The timing and intensity of rainfall events help clear pollutants from the atmosphere, he said.

Wind direction also plays a critical role in determining how smoke and haze from Indonesian fires impact air quality in the Philippines. Favorable wind patterns can redirect pollutants away from populated areas, providing temporary relief to residents in affected regions.

The Philippines has experienced recurrent air quality challenges during Indonesia's fire season, which typically peaks during dry months. Pagasa continues to monitor atmospheric conditions and provides regular updates to help the public manage exposure to poor air quality.
