Rajasthan health authorities probe IVF clinic over sex-selection ad

Rajasthan's health authorities have launched an investigation into a fertility clinic following the publication of an advertisement featuring a blue-coloured foetus, which officials believe may constitute promotion of sex-selection services. The Principal Medical and Health Secretary, Gayatri Rathore, confirmed that the imagery represents a prima facie indication of illegal activity, given that the colour blue is traditionally associated with male children in India.

Sex-selective practices remain a significant concern across India despite legal prohibitions. The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994, strictly forbids medical professionals from conducting sex determination tests or providing information that could facilitate sex-based selection, with violators facing criminal penalties and professional sanctions.

The advertisement's use of colour symbolism has prompted authorities to treat the matter as a potential breach of these regulations. Health officials are examining whether the IVF centre has engaged in counselling practices or promotional activities that contravene national guidelines on assisted reproductive technologies.
