Rajasthan man arrested for deepfake video impersonating Tamil Nadu CM
Tamil Nadu police have arrested a Rajasthan-based scammer accused of creating and circulating artificial intelligence-generated deepfake videos impersonating Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to solicit money from the public. The accused allegedly used the fraudulent videos to direct victims to a WhatsApp number for financial assistance schemes.

The CB-CID (Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department) of Tamil Nadu Police arrested the accused following an investigation into the circulation of deepfake videos on social media platforms. According to police, the suspect and his associates created synthetic media content that mimicked the appearance and voice of the state's chief minister to lend credibility to their scheme.
The fraudsters targeted members of the public by sharing the doctored videos that purported to offer financial help. Victims were directed to contact a specific WhatsApp number to access purported government assistance, which served as the entry point for the scam.
The use of deepfake technology in this case represents an emerging challenge for law enforcement agencies across India. The sophistication of AI-generated synthetic media has raised concerns about its potential misuse for fraud, impersonation, and other criminal activities.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of Indian law pertaining to cheating and impersonation. Further investigations are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the racket. Authorities have advised the public to verify information through official government channels and remain vigilant against such fraudulent schemes.
