Rajasthan surpasses green cover expansion targets ahead of schedule

Rajasthan has successfully accelerated its environmental restoration efforts, completing plantation targets well ahead of the scheduled timeline. The achievement reflects the state's commitment to reversing ecological degradation in the fragile Aravali region, which faces persistent challenges from soil erosion and deforestation.

The Aravali Green Development Project has emerged as a significant intervention, mobilizing ₹250 crore in investment across 19 districts throughout the state. The comprehensive initiative combines soil development measures with extensive tree-planting campaigns, addressing both the underlying causes of environmental decline and visible green cover loss.

Officials attributed the ahead-of-schedule completion to coordinated implementation across multiple districts and sustained focus on quality plantation practices. The project's scope encompasses not only expanding vegetation coverage but also strengthening soil health, which remains critical for agriculture and water retention in the drought-prone region.

The early achievement of targets is expected to enhance carbon sequestration efforts and provide ancillary benefits including improved groundwater retention and reduced soil degradation. Conservation experts note that such initiatives are essential for the Aravali range, which provides critical ecosystem services to a densely populated region spanning multiple states.
